Why I Started a Podcast

I'm not exactly sure what the kick in the ass was to start a podcast.  I think it came down to about three reasons (in no particular order). 

1. I was paying for soundcloud for three years and nothing doing with it. 

2. I felt like I had so much to say that an Instagram story or IGTV can't contain everything I want to say (and honestly, I don't want to be dependent on social media to house this info).  

3. I've done a lot of personal work and in the inspired words of my dad, it was time to shit or get off the pot.  (Crude, but very effective). I had a lot of self-doubt and spent time analyzing and here's what I thought. 

Why would anyone listen to me when there's Amy Porterfield, Chalene Johnson, Lori Harder, or Tiffany Carter out there?  And my friends Gretchen and Regina (just to name a couple) talk about the same kind of stuff, would they think I'm trying to do what they're doing?  Here's what helped me tamp down that doubt. 

a. In my data visualization community (where I've co-hosted a podcast for five or six years and have released 226 episodes) , I am ALWAYS encouraging new people to start their thing (blog, podcast, YT, whatever), and wouldn't it be hypocritical if I didn't take my own advice, albeit in a different community?  

b. The Amys, Chalene, Loris, or Tiffanys have their audience. So even though the topic might be the same as the others, I have my voice which is different than all the others.  And here's the magical bit: You can listen to more than one podcast! Meaning, someone can listen to Amy's podcast or my podcast.  Or, they can listen to Tiffany's podcast and my podcast. There are enough ears to go around.  I think as part of that, I had this feeling of 'Why not me?'  I'm smart enough and I love sharing information because I love researching and investing. 

c. If I don't do this, I feel like I'm not stepping into the future version of myself who serves 4k women/year and I am denying people information who really could benefit from it. 

d. What if this is just another crazy idea?  One of the things my (loving) husband once said to me was, "You get an idea and that's all you can think about or work on!" I see this in my daughter as well.  And I know that it can be frustrating to hear all about this new thing,  and for the awhile I would let the idea sit and maybe work on it a little at a time.  But here's what changed my mind; my health and leaning more into who I am.  I have these episodes of lethargy, where I don't do anything and sleep during the day.  So, while I'm feeling inspired and can do, I need to.  Secondly, I'm learning to sift through the great ideas from the good ideas and the ideas that make sense to do now, and when I decide it's an idea worth taking action on, then I need to act.  Otherwise, some other priority will pop up.  I realized that's a key for how I need to work right now.  Act on the stuff that matters most when inspired and then enjoy the rest of the day.  And that's okay! 

So the first thing that I did was come up with a couple of names.  I wanted them to be straight-forward so that if you searched in a platform, you'd find me.  I posted it to Facebook and Instagram (where most of my ideal clients are) and decided on The Entry-level Entrepreneur with Emily Kund.  It's the one that resonated with me and for the target audience.  

From there, it was on to the artwork, which will be covered in the next blogpost. 

I almost wrote that there's so much to do, but honestly, that feels like work, so I'll just say, that there are some elements to make sure I have nailed down and week by week, I'll be breaking down what I did and why I did it, and what my plan is so that if you are considering a podcast, then maybe this will help you too.
